Citrus sinensis “Chocolate Navel” is a new citrus variety that was first cultivated in Spain around 2006. The plant owes its name to the brown-colored skin of the fruit. The fruit itself does not taste like chocolate, but it is noticeably sweeter than the “regular” orange. At present, there are only three growers in Spain producing this variety. As a result, these fruits are available only from December to February each year.
It is an easy-to-grow tree that, like all citrus trees, only requires light pruning to keep its vigorous growth under control. Pruning is best done in late September or early October. On the new shoots, you will enjoy an abundance of wonderfully fragrant blossoms and fruits in the following season.
In a greenhouse, a citrus tree blooms almost all year round, alternating with fruit set. Water the citrus plant regularly and provide weekly fertilization from spring until the end of summer. This can be done perfectly with a slow-release fertilizer specially designed for Mediterranean plants, such as Fertilizzante Mediterraneo, which is available in the webshop.
