Product information
  • Article number: GLYGLA01

Glycyrrhiza glabra is also known as licorice. This bush-shaped grower is not much higher than 1½ meter. The licorice plant blooms in elongated flower thorns with purple / violet colored flowers in the months of June / July.
If the liquorice plant is stored above + 12ºC then she is evergreen, otherwise she will lose her leaf in winter.
We overwinter the plants at + 6ºC, so if you buy these plants in or just after winter they are dying above the ground. In spring the plant sprouts again from its roots. The licorice bush can be pruned if desired.

The rootstocks (licorice) of the plants can be harvested and dried from 3 years old. However, it is better to use the rootstocks of an older bush (5-7 years) because it has made root roots. The licorice can then be stored for up to 3 years.
The roots grow horizontally through the ground and not deep so you can easily pull them off.

Liqueur is used for many purposes as for herbal tea and medicinal purposes. Also as yellow dye for the coloring of various fabrics.
Liqueur is a high blood pressure boost, but also a good anti-inflammatory inhibitor and has a healing effect on arthritis.

In a tub you can possibly overwinter the plant in a light spot. Also in a garage above the freezing point is sufficient.
In the full soil at frost the foliage fills off and in the spring the pole walks out again. If possible, apply some protection in winter to protect the roots.
Winter hardness zone 9b (-6 / -8ºC).
