Pistacia chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese pistache, is a deciduous tree prized for its spectacular autumn color. In fall, the finely divided foliage turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, making it a standout in any garden or landscape.
Despite the name, this species is not the same as the pistachio tree (Pistacia vera) and does not produce edible nuts. However, it is highly valued for its ornamental qualities and excellent adaptability to temperate climates.
The tree grows into a rounded, compact crown, reaching a mature height of 6 to 10 meters. In spring, it produces bright green, pinnate leaves made up of 10 to 20 narrow leaflets. The summer canopy is dense and provides ample shade, followed by an intense color show in autumn. Older trees develop deeply fissured, decorative bark.
Chinese pistache prefers full sun and warmth, and thrives in well-drained, moderately dry soil. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance – ideal for low-maintenance gardens or urban plantings.
Although it originates from warmer regions, this species is surprisingly cold-hardy and resilient to wind, drought, and pollution.
Hardiness zone: 6b (–20 °C)
Tip: The more sun it gets, the brighter the fall colors – plant in full sun for the best display.
