Kniphofia “Red Rocket” is also known as torch lily or red hot poker.
This South African native perennial is a true showstopper in any sunny garden.

True to its name, Red Rocket sends up tall flower spikes from a sturdy clump in summer, topped with spectacular fiery red blooms. As the flowers mature, they shift to orange and yellow, creating a striking flame effect. Butterflies and bees love it!

In the wild, Kniphofia can form large clumps up to a meter wide. In our gardens, it typically reaches a flowering height of 70–90 cm and spreads to about 50 cm.

This plant can be pruned easily. We cut back the old, withered foliage in early spring, right above the ground, to make way for fresh new growth. Flower spikes can be removed after blooming to keep the plant tidy and to encourage rebloom.

Kniphofia thrives in full sun. The more sun it gets, the more abundant the flowers. In dry periods, don’t hesitate to water, especially during summer bloom. Fertilize in early spring and again in July if needed with a general-purpose fertilizer.

As autumn approaches, the foliage dies back naturally. In colder areas, protect the roots with a layer of mulch. In milder winters, Kniphofia can stay in the ground. If grown in a pot, overwinter in a frost-free, sheltered spot.

From May onwards, when the sun gains strength, she returns with her exotic-looking flowers.
Red Rocket loves warmth and sunshine, and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses or other sun-lovers.

In wet winters, keep her slightly dry or protect her well from excess moisture and frost.
