Russelia equisetiformis, commonly known as the firecracker plant or coral fountain, is a graceful, arching subshrub with a distinctly exotic look. Native to Mexico, this sun-loving plant is instantly recognizable by its fine, rush-like stems and spectacular, long-lasting bloom.
It produces slender, cascading stems that can trail up to a metre in length, creating a waterfall-like effect. Instead of broad leaves, Russelia develops small, scale-like structures, giving it an airy, bamboo-like appearance. From spring to late autumn, it bursts into bloom with countless scarlet-red tubular flowers – like a fountain of miniature fireworks.
Rich in nectar, the flowers are a magnet for pollinators – especially bees and butterflies – and in its native habitat, for hummingbirds too. In European gardens or on sunny balconies, it attracts plenty of beneficial insects.
Russelia equisetiformis thrives in full sun and prefers a well-drained, moderately dry soil. While drought-tolerant, it rewards regular watering during the growing season with more vigorous blooming. In temperate climates, it is not frost-hardy and should be grown in containers that can be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location.
With its striking flowers, elegant structure, and low maintenance needs, the firecracker plant is a perfect choice for pots, hanging baskets, or as a standout accent among sun-loving patio plants.
Hardiness: not frost-hardy (min. 5–10 °C)
Tip: Prune back old or dry stems in early spring to encourage fresh growth and extend the flowering season.
