yzygium jambos, commonly known as rose apple or djamboe aer mawar, is a tropical fruit tree prized for its glossy foliage, creamy-white flowers, and fragrant fruits. Native to Southeast Asia, it is widely cultivated for both its ornamental value and edible produce.
The name rose apple refers to the fruit’s subtle rose-like aroma. The pear-shaped fruits are pale yellow to pink and have a crisp texture with a mild, floral flavor. They are delicious fresh or used in jams, desserts, and garnishes.
This tropical plant grows as a shrub or small tree, with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that emerge reddish-bronze. In spring, it produces large, fluffy creamy-white flowers resembling powder puffs – highly attractive to pollinators.
Syzygium jambos thrives in warmth and humidity. Provide a sunny to semi-shaded spot with well-draining, slightly acidic soil. During the growing season, water regularly and fertilize with a tropical plant feed or citrus fertilizer.
The plant is not frost hardy and should overwinter indoors above 10 °C. Place it in a bright, frost-free location and reduce watering in winter – avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
Hardiness zone: 11b (+5 °C)
Tip: In stable tropical conditions or a heated greenhouse, this plant can bloom and fruit twice a year.
