Musa florida variegata is a brightly colored banana that looks very tropical. The florida has white and green marbled patterns on its leaves and grows compactly compared to many outdoor bananas.
The Musa is fast-growing but reaches a maximum height of about 180 cm. This makes it suitable for keeping indoors. This will be necessary, as the Florida is not winter hardy. The plant needs light to bring out its colors clearly. However, direct sunlight is not good for the Musa, as it could burn its leaves. A spot with morning sun is recommended, provided it also receives plenty of indirect light during the rest of the day.
The plant is a variegated species and therefore does not originate from a specific area or region. However, the ancestor of Musa florida variegata comes from the tropical region around the equator and therefore requires these conditions. Minimum temperatures of 15 degrees are desired year-round. Light requirements are approximately 50/50 with respect to dark hours. When the plant needs water, a tropical downpour is desirable; therefore, give the plant sufficient water at once. Once the plant has absorbed its water and the pot is dry, water can be given again. Bananas indicate very clearly when they are too dry. The leaves then fold inwards and droop. However, do not give too much water; continuously wet feet mean that this plant will rot. After all, the banana is a herbaceous plant and has no woody parts that can withstand prolonged wetness.
If you are experienced with bananas, the Florida Variegata is one of the most exciting bananas to own; the colors are spectacular and will vary from leaf to leaf.
Winter hardiness zone 12b (+15ºC).
