Farfugium japonicum is also known as the leopard plant. It has beautiful large green leaves that overlap each other. In terms of growth, the plant is similar to Tetrapanax or Fatsia, and it has similar requirements for its location. In spots where other plants would receive too little sun, Farfugium thrives remarkably well.
As the name suggests, the plant originates from Japan. It is also commonly found in the wild in Korea and Taiwan. Farfugium prefers a shady location with humus-rich soil.
The plant can reach up to one meter in height. Flowering takes place from late summer into autumn, producing tall stems topped with yellow flowers. In winter, Farfugium will lose much of its foliage. During severe frost, it is advisable to protect the plant by covering it with old leaves, straw, or other organic material. Even better is to create a frame around the plant and fill it with old garden leaves, forming a protective “basket” against the cold.
Farfugium is a valuable addition to gardens with damp, shady spots where other plants do not grow well. It is also indispensable in a Japanese garden.
