Musa balbisiana 'Thai Black' is a rare banana variety originating from Southeast Asia. As the name suggests, this banana is especially unique because of its color. Mature specimens develop black features that create a beautiful contrast with the rest of the plant’s green foliage.
Younger plants are green with a light silvery sheen on the trunk. Its growth habit differs considerably from the well-known Musa basjoo. While Musa basjoo grows steadily upward and also develops a nicely filled-out width with broad leaf formation, the Thai Black mainly focuses on height. In nature, this can result in specimens reaching up to 7 meters tall. In Europe, however, this variety remains much smaller. Thai Black is best kept in a pot.
This banana is not hardy like Musa basjoo and therefore needs protection during winter. Make sure the plant is kept indoors in winter in a frost-free location. The leaves can be cut off to prevent damage, make the plant easier to transport, and reduce its water requirements. During this period, the Thai Black should not dry out completely, but it is equally important that it does not remain too wet. When temperatures rise again, the plant can be placed outdoors and it will quickly resume growth. A good option is to dig up the plant each year and replant it in open ground in spring. This way, you can enjoy a special and exotic banana in your garden soil.
