Leucaena leucocephala, commonly known as white mimosa, is a fast-growing tropical tree native to Central and South America. It originates from countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica and has spread worldwide due to its vigorous growth and ornamental flowers.
The tree is well-known for its airy white flower heads that appear in summer. These fluffy flowers give the tree a cloud-like appearance and emit a subtle honey scent that attracts many pollinators. The combination of fine pinnate leaves and striking flowers makes white mimosa a popular ornamental tree in warm gardens.
Leucaena leucocephala can grow into a medium-sized tree, reaching 6 to 10 meters in height. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with well-draining, fertile soil. Although fairly drought-tolerant, the tree is not frost-hardy and should be overwintered frost-free in colder regions.
Hardiness: zone 11 (+5ºC).
