Dianella tasmanica variegata is an evergreen plant originally from Australia. It is a truly typical Australian plant, which is especially evident in the rhizomes from which it grows and in its growth and flowering habits.

As its name suggests, Dianella is commonly found in Tasmania, but the plant is also widespread on the Australian mainland. It grows particularly well in the southeastern part of the country. Its growth habit is reminiscent of Phormium from nearby New Zealand. The plant has strong, fleshy rhizomes from which it develops. Thanks to these roots, it can create a firm base for itself to grow in, which is why it is often found along the coast in places where other plants would not be able to root.

The leaves of Dianella also help the plant cope well with these conditions. The grass-like leaves of the Tasmanian flax lily are resistant to strong winds.

Flowering occurs in early spring and summer, in Australia roughly from August to January. The plant produces a stem from which small purple flowers emerge. The flowers hang in small clusters with sometimes up to ten flowers per cluster. The fruits that follow are green and later turn darker. These fruits are not edible and are toxic; consumption causes an unpleasant tingling sensation in the mouth.

The “variegata” part of the plant’s name refers to the coloration of the leaves. Unlike the regular Dianella, this variety has variegated foliage. Dianella is generally a popular cultivated plant with many varieties, especially offered in Australia. The variegated colour of this type adds just a bit of extra interest.

Dianella is hardy when planted in the right spot in the garden. Make sure it does not stay too wet, as the rhizomes may rot. In very low temperatures below freezing, it is advisable to cover the plant with some mulch or old leaves. As long as the rhizomes survive the winter, the plant will sprout again in spring. Light frost is not a problem for this plant; when placed in a sheltered location and somewhat protected from wind and rain, it will flower reliably every year.

Hardiness zone 9 (-5 ºC).
