Astelia banksii, also known as Kowharawhara, is a striking ornamental plant native to New Zealand. It features long, narrow leaves with a silvery sheen and a sturdy, grass-like texture, making it an excellent choice for adding a natural, tropical touch to your garden or as a unique container plant.
The plant grows compactly, reaching about 1 meter in height and width. The leaves form a dense rosette that contrasts beautifully with evergreen or colorful plants. In summer, small, inconspicuous flowers appear, followed by berries that attract birds.
Astelia banksii prefers a partially shaded location with well-draining, moist soil. It is relatively low-maintenance and fairly frost-tolerant as long as the roots remain dry.
Hardiness zone: 8b (–9 °C)
Tip: Protect young plants with mulch during cold winters and choose a sheltered spot.
