Dicksonia antarctica is a Tasmanian tree fern. These occur in Tasmania. He can grow between 3 and 5 cm a year. It is actually not a real strain, but dead leaves and humus.

In this humus are the roots of the plant, the roots grow with the plant. He can be more than 400 years old!
Older ones can easily reach a trunk diameter of more than 1 meter.
The plant prefers a shady or semi-shady place. Older specimens may also be placed in a somewhat sunnier place (if sufficient water), but half shade to shade is preferred.
Especially in dry weather the trunk occasionally wet once so that the roots can absorb their moisture extra well, the stem should not dry out, the plant should really get from above water.
In this way the tree ferns store the water in its trunk.
Because the plant does not grow very fast, larger specimens are very expensive.

The Dicksonia antarctica is not hardy. However, in our climate, temperatures below -3ºC need to be taken for safety when planted in the ground.
If for a longer frost period -0ºC or lower is predicted, then the tree fern well pack with climate cloth. On the ground near the trunk leaf or bark for protection.
The leaves still present (in winter he loses his leaves in frost) can be tied or cut off.
Then insulate the stem at the height of the growth point with straw and / or leaf, etc.
We fill the growth pear and the head with straw and over it a bucket, occasionally watering in the winter!
In a frost-free area where it is dark, the plant can also overwinter, or just soak the month a little so that the trunk does not dry out.
This exclusive tree fern is also very suitable for indoor or office space and is a perfect eye-catcher.
Keeping slightly moist is already good and furthermore he does not make difficult demands.
Occasionally wet the stem to prevent complete dehydration, with the water a small amount of fertilization may be given every two months.
Winter hardiness zone 10a (-3ºC).

ALL OUR FERNS HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY ROUNDED IN A POT!
