Plumbago indica, commonly known as Red Plumbago, Indian Leadwort, or Rosy-flowered Leadwort, is an attractive ornamental plant belonging to the family Plumbaginaceae. Unlike the more widely known blue-flowering Plumbago auriculata, this species is valued for its striking pink to bright red flowers, which give the plant a distinctly tropical appearance.

The Red Plumbago is an evergreen, shrubby plant with a naturally loose and spreading growth habit. Its glossy green, oval leaves provide an attractive background for the clusters of tubular flowers that appear mainly during the warmer months, with flowering often extending into autumn under favourable conditions. The flowers have five delicate lobes and are notable for their intense rosy-red colour.

Plumbago indica is native to tropical regions of Asia, including parts of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and southern China. It thrives in a warm, sheltered position in full sun and prefers a fertile, well-drained soil. In temperate climates such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and similar regions, it is generally grown as a container plant, conservatory plant, or greenhouse specimen, as it is not frost hardy.

During the growing season, the plant benefits from regular watering, while allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Good drainage is essential, as waterlogged conditions can damage the roots. Feeding with a balanced fertiliser during active growth encourages healthy foliage and abundant flowering. In winter, the plant should be kept frost-free and watered more sparingly. Regular pruning helps maintain a compact shape and promotes a bushier appearance.

Care should be taken when handling the plant, as the sap may cause skin irritation in some people. Wearing gloves when pruning or repotting is recommended.
