Millettia japonica Satsuma is a perennial with beautiful flowers in summer. The Millettia has elongated bright green glossy pinnate leaves composed on 7 to 9 leaves.
In the month of June, the great flowering starts with 8-10 cm long lateral flower clusters. The butterfly-like flowers are colored crimson to deep purple, with the flower edges turning dark purple to almost black. The flower smells strong, subtly scented to spicy.
Flowering repeats from June to October and is abundant.
The plant likes full sun and the soil likes fertile and well-drained.
The plant can reach a height of 5 to 6 meters and grows shrubby and can climb. Can be pruned to keep it at the desired height and width.

This Millettia species is the most cold tolerant species in the Millettia genus. The plant can tolerate freezing temperatures. It likes to be sheltered from cold winds in winter.
